5 Main Areas of Concern for Students With Auditory Processing Disorders

Many APD students will experience academic difficulties if the auditory abnormalities are not recognised and treated. Here are the top 5 issues kids with auditory processing disorder (APD) may encounter.

1. Auditory figure-ground issues: a child with trouble focusing on background noise. Unorganised, noisy classrooms can be quite frustrating.

2. Auditory memory issues: This refers to a child's inability to recall information like lists, instructions, or study materials. The inability to recall anything can be either immediate ("I can't remember it now") or delayed ("I can't remember it when I need it for later").

3. Auditory discrimination issues: They occur when a child has trouble telling apart similar words or sounds (such as COAT/BOAT or CH/SH). This can all impact following instructions, reading, spelling, and writing.

4. Auditory attention issues: These occur when a child is unable to maintain concentration while listening long enough to finish a task or necessity, such as paying attention to a teacher in class.

5. Auditory cohesiveness issues: when more complex listening tasks are challenging. Concluding discussions, deciphering riddles, and solving verbal maths problems require advanced auditory processing and linguistic skills. They grow most effectively when the other skills (levels 1 through 4 above) remain present.
